On the Charge - signed by Willie John McBride
Nobody has played more games for the British Lions than Willie John McBride. In an international career lasting from 1962 to 1975, he won 63 caps for Ireland, including 12 as Captain. He was one of the toughest locks the game has ever seen, and was renowned for his complete commitment and tenacity. His first cap came in a defeat to England aged 21 and he was selected for the British Lions within four months. He went on to complete an astounding 5 tours with the Lions and a record 17 Lions Test appearances. He also managed their tour of New Zealand in 1983. In 1971, after captaining the Lions to their first victory over New Zealand in 12 years, he famously said, "Now I can die happy."
Willie wouldn't have been happy to have missed the following year, arguably one of the most successful for any rugby man. 1974 was Willie's year. He captained an unfancied Ireland side to a Five Nations Championship and then led the Lions on an unbeaten tour of South Africa. After winning their first 21 games, only a controversial draw in the final test robbed the Lions of a complete whitewash.
The famed rugby thinker, John Dawes, described Willie as, "A great man, a great forward, a great Lion."
