Victorious - Print celebrating England's 2001 winter tour, signed by the squad
A major turning point in English cricket history occurred back in 2001 when skipper Nasser Hussein led his side to successive Test series victories in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This, on the back of wins against Zimbabwe and West Indies signalled a return to form that was to ultimately lead them to the Ashes four years later.
After two predictable draws in Pakistan the 2001 series came alive in the deciding Test at Karachi. With both sides posting respectable first innings totals, bowlers Darren Gough, Ashley Giles, Craig White and Andy Caddick turned the match on its head, skittling out the home side for just 158.
With a winning position in sight England slumped to 65-3 before Graeme Hick and Alec Stewart guided the tourists' home to claim a thrilling and famous six wicket win. It was England's first series victory on Pakistani soil for 39 years.
The winter tour continued to Sri Lanka, where England succumbed to a bad 1st Test defeat in Galle, before levelling with a spirited display in Kandy just days later.
But once again the series was decided in the final test, but this time on a spectacular third day that saw a crumbling wicket produce 22 dismissals on a day of high drama.
With bowlers Gough, Caddick, Croft and Giles causing all sorts of problems Sri Lanka were dismissed for a measly 81 all out. Needing just 74 to win, England toiled falling to 43-4 at one stage, before a determined unbeaten 32 from Graeme Thorpe saw the visitors home with four wickets to spare.
It was the end of a truly memorable winter for English cricket, one in which the whole team had done themselves proud.
