Whether they were the greatest Arsenal defensive line-up, or one of the world's leading back-fours, the formation represented here will always be viewed as the greatest to run out at Highbury. What made this group of men greater than the sum of their parts was an innate understanding and a degree of perception that gave new meaning to the offside trap; this was a line that could move forward together without an order, and instinctively provide cover for one another without so much as a sideways glance.
Only Tony Adams started his career at the north London club. Dixon, Bould and Winterburn began theirs elsewhere but, by 1988, all four were melded together in an Arsenal team hungry for silverwear. With any one man of this back four absent, it is doubtful whether Arsenal would have gone on to win the League twice in three years, as they did in 1989 and 1991. More trophy success followed with the FA Cup in 1993 and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1994.
In Dixon and Winterburn, Arsenal had two attack-minded full backs. Both were tough in the tackle with an instinctive will to go forward and the engines to recover quickly. In Bould, Arsenal were blessed with a formidable performer, stern in the tackle but a model of consistency. And what can one add about Tony Adams? Quite simply, he was the glue that bound his team together. A supreme motivator of men and an inspirational captain, Adams became the face of Arsenal, leading them to two very different title successes at either end of the 1990s.
