The Nugget - signed by Steve Davis
Steve Davis, the 'Master Cueman', is undoubtedly one of the greatest snooker players of all time, dominating the game in the 1980s, when he won the World Championship six times and was runner-up twice. His ultra-calm manner and quiet determination made him ideally suited to a game which requires nerves of steel, and contrasted sharply with one of his main adversaries of the time, Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, who was as irascible and unpredictable as Davis was unflappable.
Nevertheless, Higgins was a formidable and hugely talented opponent, who never failed to give all the top players a run for their money. In the 1981 World Championships Davis relentlessly knocked out all the opposition, including Higgins, and ultimately beat Doug Mountjoy in the final to take the trophy.
Steve's implacable temperament was perhaps best illustrated at the end of the 1985 final, which had a television audience of 18.5 million on the edge of their seats until well after midnight, watching the black ball finish. When asked for his comments after the match by a BBC 2 reporter - a match which was arguably one of the most dramatic ever played - Davis merely said, 'It's all there in black and white'.
