Spurs League Cup Winners 1971 - signed by Chivers and Mullery
The striker Martin Chivers and midfielder Alan Mullery enjoyed careers at Tottenham which overlapped in the late 1960s and early 70s, during which time they established themselves as two of the club's all-time greats.
Martin Chivers was bought from Southampton in January 1968 for the then record fee of £125,000. White Hart Lane bought him to play alongside, Jimmy Greaves, the club's all-time best goalscorer, and eventually to replace him.
The beginning of the 1970-71 season marked the beginning of Chivers' golden years, both for the club and for his country. The 7 goals he scored in the League Cup, including the 2 he scored in the final against Aston Villa, were largely responsible for Spurs winning the Cup.
Alan Mullery joined Spurs in 1963 from Fulham and stayed with the club for the next eight years. In 1971 he captained England in one of the 35 games he played for his country. His outstanding abilities as a midfield player were used to excellent effect in the 1971 League Cup campaign and helped to secure the final victory over Aston Villa at Wembley.
