Spurs FA Cup Winners 1962 - signed by Jones, Mackay and Greaves
When Spurs won the FA Cup in 1962, they had enjoyed a magnificent season in which their new signing, Jimmy Greaves had made his presence felt in no uncertain terms. In March they had had the triple targets of the League title, FA Cup and European Cup in their sights, having won the Double the previous year. However, in the end they had to settle for the FA Cup - making them only the second club of the century to have won it in successive years. Jimmy Greaves was responsible for the first goal of the 3-1 match against Burnley at Wembley.
Dave Mackay, the 'Hardman' of Tottenham, had been brought south of the border by Bill Nicholson in his bid to assemble what was arguably the greatest club side ever to play in the English League. Mackay's supreme competitiveness, fearlessness and drive were second to none and led one journalist to quip that, "His tackling could have earned him a good living felling trees."
Cliff Jones, an old-fashioned winger, had been at Tottenham since 1957 and was to witness the club come alive under the inspirational management of Bill Nicholson. One of Nicholson's mantras was, "If you're not in possession, get in position." To Jones this piece of wisdom summed up football and underpinned his game. He played an important role in securing the Double in 1961 and in winning the FA Cup in1962 against Burnley, of whom he said, "They were one of the best we played against in that era."
