The Great All-Rounder- signed by Sir Garfield Sobers
Sir Gary Sobers plays a spectacular cover drive during the Second Test against England at Edgbaston in 1973. Always the flamboyant stylist, Sobers was a risk-taker in every shot he played. This spectacular image, hand-signed by Sir Gary, shows him dancing down the wicket as England wicket-keeper Alan Knott looks on.
Earlier in his Test Match career against Pakistan in the 1958 Kingston Test, Gary Sobers was still a relative unknown. Ten hours, 38 boundaries and an unbeaten 365 runs later, Sobers was carried back to the pavilion by a sea of jubilant Jamaicans. At only 21 years of age, Sobers' place in history was assured. He had set a record haul that remained unsurpassed for over 36 years. Sobers had arrived and, over the course of the following decade, helped the West Indies carve out a reputation as the foremost test side of the age.
The great Donald Bradman was later moved to state that Sobers was, "Such an exciting player to watch because the emphasis is on power and aggression rather than technique - the latter being the servant not the master." All these qualities in the right proportion are in evidence in this stunning shot of Sobers in action.
As West Indian Captain, Gary Sobers was an inspiration, carving out a reputation as the world's pre-eminent all-rounder. With the new ball he made an excellent opening bowler with the ability to vary the pace of delivery and produce an awesome amount of swing.
