Saint Helens Challenge Cup Winners 2004 - signed by Paul Sculthorpe
Paul Sculthorpe, St Helens' inspirational captain, was signed from Warrington Wolves for £375,000. His performances for Saints have made that price tag, a then record for a forward, seem like a bargain. Scully has scored over 200 tries in just over a century of appearances, and accumulated over 1000 points.
Able to effortlessly switch from forwards to backs within a game, Paul's versatility has been invaluable to St Helens. His creative kicking from the back line has been equally complimented by grit and hard running with the forwards.
Saints fans will never forget his late drop goal against Brisbane Broncos that was enough to win the World Club Championship in 2001. His performances that season earned him the prestigious Man of Steel award, which he went on to keep for another season, becoming the first ever player to do so.
At the beginning of the 2004 season, Scully was leading the Saints through some of their best performances of any era. They easily swept aside Bradford, Leeds, Hull and Huddersfield to set up a showdown with bitter rivals Wigan in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
The old enemy were cast aside 32-16, with Scully muscling his way over the try line, adding to Sean Long's exemplary kicking and further tries from Lee Gilmour, Paul Wellens and two for Willie Talau.
