Side Step - signed by Phil Bennett
Phil Bennett came from the Welsh production line for outstanding fly-halves that gave us Cliff Morgan, Jonathan Davies and Barry John. He was versatile though, winning caps at full back and centre. He made his international debut in 1969, coming on as a substitute during an 8-8 draw with France. By the time he retired from international rugby in 1978 he held the Welsh scoring record, with 166 points in 29 games.
One of his finest moments was captaining the Wales side that won the Grand Slam in 1978. He had an excellent campaign, including a tremendous try-scoring performance in the 13-7 victory over France.
'Benny' completed two tours for the British Lions, including the famous 1974 tour of South Africa, where only a disputed decision in the final game prevented them completing a whitewash. Bennett scored 103 points on the tour and his 50-yard try in the second test is a still cited now as a great example of individual rugby excellence. He also captained the Lions squad that included 18 Welshmen on a less successful tour of New Zealand in 1977.
In 1973 he was pivotal to the build-up to what is frequently dubbed 'the greatest try of all time' for the Barbarians against New Zealand. Bennett received the ball in defence, turned and side-stepped past 3 All Blacks, "Brilliant ... Oh! That's brilliant!" was commentator Cliff Morgan's response before the ball eventually reached Gareth Edwards, who sealed the incredible move with a try.
Bill Mclaren, for many years the voice of rugby, has this to say about Phil Bennett, "His adhesive hands, his educated boot, his nose for space and those shimmering side-steps ... could light up a game with pure genius."
