Olympic Gold - signed by Sebastian Coe
World record-breaker Sebastian Coe holds off the challenges of Jurgen Straub and arch-rival Steve Ovett to take gold at the Moscow Olympics of 1980. Who can forget Seb Coe crossing the line, arms aloft? Every taut sinew in Coe's face portrays his amazement at realising the enormity of his golden achievement.
In one of the all-time great Olympic middle-distance races, Coe had plenty of work to do to secure the gold, with 100 metres remaining. His kick on the final curve was simply sensational, passing East German Jurgen Straub and driving to the finish line with metres to spare.
The previous year, Coe smashed the 800m, 1500m and mile world records and travelled to Moscow as favourite for the 800m. His bitter rival Steve Ovett was the hot favourite for the 1500m. In a reversal of fortunes, Ovett took the 800 title in Moscow in what Coe described as, "The worst race of my life".
Coe and Ovett always measured their achievements against those of their counterpart but they had not raced each other for over 2 years. The pressure and anticipation coming into the 1500m final was quite unbelievable. This was to be the biggest test of Coe's career. He passed it in the most spectacular style, striding home to golden glory and proving without doubt he was the world's greatest miler.
