Official World Cup Poster - Chile 1962



The seventh World Cup competition saw Pele and his Brazilian team secure their second successive World Cup crown, beating Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final. Ironically after much anticipation, Pele only played in the first game of the finals before withdrawing from the team with injury.

However, this tournament is as much remembered for the violence that occurred in several of the games as the beautiful game turned ugly. One particular encounter between Italy and hosts Chile will forever be recalled as an exceptionally bloody encounter in which two Italians were sent off and one had his nose broken by a solid left-hook from a Chilean player. The game is immortalised in football folklore as "The Battle of Santiago".

So the ugly side of football had reared its head for the first time in a World Cup competition. Even the Brazilian team was not able to deliver their usual scintillating style of play in the face of aggressive opponents. Nevertheless their quality shone through and they joined Italy and Uruguay in the honours list as the only nations to have won the Jules Rimet trophy on two occasions.
