Le God - signed by Matt Le Tissier
When Matt Le Tissier joined Southampton as an apprentice in 1985, it marked the beginning of a partnership which would last for the next 17 years. Such loyalty to a single club is very rare in modern football, particularly for a player of Le Tissier's calibre who might have been expected to set his heights a little higher. However, his loyalty was rewarded by the adulation of the Saints fans who regard him as being the single most important reason for the club's long stay in the top flight.
In his first season for the club he scored a hat-trick on a snow-bound pitch against Leicester; a fitting beginning to his long and illustrious career with the club. In 1989/90 he became the club's chief penalty-taker, and his reputation for scoring from the spot was legendary.
Matt Le Tissier retired in 2002 and in June of that year a testimonial was held for him at St Mary's Stadium, which attracted an emotional crowd of 32,000. Gazza summed it up when he said of Le Tissier, 'The guy's a genius. It's kind of sad when you have to end your career and pack it all in, but this guy's had it all and seen it all, he's been brilliant.'
