Having played in two tours with the British Lions and tasted Six Nations success with England, his greatest hour will always be the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Throughout the tournament, Dawson provided the vital link between the England pack and Jonny Wilkinson; the link that ultimately won the tournament for England in the dying seconds of the final.
