British Lions 1997 - signed by Matt Dawson
The quintessential modern scrum-half, Matt Dawson possesses both a quick pair of feet and a lightning fast rugby brain. A player renowned for spotting game-winning opportunities in the biggest games, Dawson is more than capable of maximising them for his team, be it Northampton Saints, England, or the British Lions. The master of the quickly-taken penalty and of forcing surprise touch-downs, Dawson can turn a situation on its head before an opposing defence can muster any resistance.
Sport played a massive part in Dawson's life whilst growing up. Both a full back for Chelsea Boys and a wicket-keeper for Buckinghamshire, Dawson made his full international rugby debut for England in 1995 whilst he was still earning a living as a teacher. He went on to break the all-time record for caps in his position as a scrum half, no mean feat, considering the compeition for his position.
Having played in two tours with the British Lions and tasted Six Nations success with England, his greatest hour will always be the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Throughout the tournament, Dawson provided the vital link between the England pack and Jonny Wilkinson; the link that ultimately won the tournament for England in the dying seconds of the final.
