England Rugby World Cup Winners 2003 - Signed by Matt Dawson

England scrum half, Matt Dawson, was not only blessed with more than his fair share of sporting aptitude - he kept wicket for Buckinghamshire and played for Chelsea Boys in his youth and is now an accomplished golfer - but also with a father, Ron, who recognised his son's potential and encouraged him to take up rugby. He coached Matt and took charge of his early development, to devastating effect.

Matt Dawson has gone on to become England's most capped scrum half ever, as well as distinguishing himself with Northampton Saints and now his most recent club, London Wasps. At whatever level, he is famous for his astuteness in spotting openings and reading the game and his ability to deliver under pressure. Above all, Matt Dawson is a supremely versatile player, being the master of the quickly taken tap penalty; of forcing opponents to concede penalty points, of executing surprise touch downs before a defence can be rallied and even as a place kicker - he has successfully taken 3 penalties and 6 conversions for his country.

Of course, it was as a member of the 2003 World Cup-winning squad that Dawson saw his finest hour, playing a critical role for his country. In the final against Australia in Sydney, Dawson seemed to be everywhere, and, like all the players, used every last ounce of his energy to secure victory for England. His critical pass to Jonny Wilkinson in the last minute of the game allowed him to score the drop goal which clinched the tournament.
