World Cup Winner - signed by Martin Peters
Martin Peters, whose versatility on the football field earned him the comment from Alf Ramsey that he was, 'Ten years ahead of his time', will always be remembered by England fans for his 1966 World Cup final goal which put England 2-1 up against West Germany.
Peters, who was a colleague of Bobby Moore at West Ham, was no doubt selected by Ramsey for his fine technical skills, his deft and accurate passing and his happy knack of popping up in the penalty box to score. Significantly, it was the two West Ham players who had scored the two goals which put England in such a seemingly unassailable position 12 minutes from the end of the final. When Peters slammed the ball into the back of the net it seemed as if it was all over, but as we now know, the real drama was yet to come.
Like every player who took part in that momentous final, Martin Peters will go down in the annals of history for his contribution to an historic victory.
