England Rugby World Cup Winners 2003 - Signed by Martin Johnson
"This guy is something special," said Clive Woodward the England coach of his Captain, Martin Johnson, after the team's successful tour of the Southern Hemisphere in the summer of 2003. Johnson had led the England team to their first away win against New Zealand in 30 years and their first ever win against Australia on Australian soil. "He has been fantastic," said Woodward, "We always knew that - but even I've been surprised by the new heights he's getting to and I just hope he can keep it going now and move to a new level come the World Cup in October."
Johnson didn't disappoint. The giant of the England squad played a magnificent World Cup, producing his best performance when the stakes were highest. Dominant in the line-out and devastatingly effective in the tight exchanges, Martin Johnson led by example, arguably saving his best ever England game until the end of his career.
When England seemed to be on the point of losing the final - which they should have won handsomely - Johnson rallied his troops for one decisive last push. It was his clear-headedness and determination which helped set up a winning position in the final moments of the game, and his inspirational leadership which brought England the ultimate glory of the World Cup.
Has there ever been a more glorious end to an illustrious career in the history of Rugby? His 11 years as a player earned him 84 caps for England and a host of glittering prizes which included Triple Crowns, Six Nations titles, Grand Slams, a successful Lions Tour and finally, the ultimate triumph of a World Cup victory.
Honoured by his country with both a CBE and an MBE in recognition of his tremendous contribution to the game of Rugby Union, Martin Johnson's retirement left a gaping hole in the leadership of the England team which they are still struggling to fill.
