World Champion 2003 - signed by Mark Williams
Mark Williams was a promising amateur boxer before he realised he could inflict more damage with a cue in his hand. Two World Titles later, it's obvious that he made the right decision. He is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest single ball potters that the game has ever seen, and is always among the favourites for any major event.
His astonishing potting ability, powered by a textbook cueing action, is second to none, but you don't reach and retain the number one spot through potting alone. Mark's all round game is a match for any player on the circuit.
After turning pro in 1992 he won his first ranking title, the Regal Welsh Masters, in 1996. Mark's first World Title came in a thriller at the Crucible in 2001 when he came from 13-7 down to beat fellow Welshman, Matthew Stevens, and became the first ever left-handed World Champion.
2003 saw him become only the third player to win the UK, Masters and Embassy crowns in one season. His victory over Ken Doherty was probably the most exciting final of the trio, with the Irishman fighting back from 11-5 down to level at 16-16. Williams held his famous ice-cool nerve to win the final two frames and seal the victory.
