Liverpool Champions of Europe 2005 - Signed by Xabi Alonso
25th May 2005 is a day that will stay in the memory of all Liverpool supporters. The overwhelming underdogs had already seen off Juventus and Chelsea to clinch their place in the final at Istanbul's Ataturk Stadium. The bookies and media expected the pride of Seria A to see off Benitez's inconsistent performers and Liverpool's first-half performance gave them little to worry about as Paolo Maldini opened the scoring followed by two goals from Hernan Crespo. Half-time and 3-0 down, the game looked over with only damage limitation looking on the cards for an outclassed Liverpool.
Then, in seven of the most dramatic minutes of European Cup football, the Reds showed why football is such a mesmerizing game. A Gerrard header was quickly followed by Vladi Smicer's well-paced drive to bring the score back to 3-2. With the roar from over 30,000 Liverpool fans driving him on, Gerrard surged forward only to be upended in the penalty area. Cue Xabi Alonso and goal number three. As the game moved into extra time, there was time for further dramatics as Jerzy Dudek made two remarkable saves from Shevchenko. Perhaps only now was the match moving in Liverpool's favour.
The penalty shoot-out will always be remembered for Dudek's apeing of Grobelaar's famous tactics against Roma in 1984. As Milan misfired, it was left to Shevchenko to save the match. He aimed straight but without conviction and Dudek palmed away the shot to the total delight of his teammates.
As Milan slumped to the ground in total disbelief and shock, Liverpool celebrated an astonishing fifth win in Europe's most prestigious club competition.
