Lions Legend - Signed by JPR Williams

Probably the greatest ever full back to play the game, John Peter Rhys Williams was part of the famous quintet of Welsh Rugby, along with Gareth Edwards, Barry John and Gerald and Mervyn Davies. He was arguably the first player to make the full back position one of attack as well as defence and regularly stepped up into the line of attack.

After winning his first cap in 1969 he became a pivotal figure throughout the golden era of Welsh rugby in the 1970s winning 3 Grand Slams, 6 Triple Crowns and 8 Championships. In 11 matches against England, JPR never lost once. Willie John McBride has described him as, "The greatest defensive player in my era or any other era."

Known as 'Old Twinkletoes', JPR Williams appeared in two British Lions tours. In 1971 he played in all four Tests during the Lions first ever full series victory over New Zealand. He scored four tries and also kicked a 45-yard drop goal in the final Test to help seal the series win. The controversial South African Tour of 1974 saw the Lions emerge unbeaten to claim their first series win in South Africa for 78 years. JPR Williams scored three tries on the tour and played in all four Tests.
