The 1972 FA Cup Final took place on 6 May 1972 at Wembley Stadium. It was the Centenary final and was contested between cup holders Arsenal, who had won the English Championship and FA Cup the previous season, and Leeds United, who had won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and finished 2nd in the league the previous season.
In the fifty-third minute Mick Jones crossed and Allan 'Sniffer' Clarke headed powerfully past Arsenal goalkeeper, Geoff Barnett for the only goal of the game. After the disappointment of defeat in the 1965 and 1970 FA Cup Finals, Leeds United were able to lift the FA Cup for the first and so far the only time in their history.
