Brazilian Master - signed by Juninho
In 1993 Juninho Paulista joined Sao Paulo FC, helping them win the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup. In 1995, he played his first match for Brazil, scoring on his debut and becoming Brazilian Player of the Year. In that year, he arrived at Middlesbrough for a transfer fee of £4.75 million; a hugely ambitious move by the Teeside club. Their ambitions were to be rewarded by performance after performance of breathtaking skills by the diminutive midfielder.
Weighing little over nine stone, he was thought too slight for the rigours of the Premiership, but he made light of his lack of physique by using skills he had learnt as a boy playing futbol de salao. As he recalled: "I didn't play eleven-a-side football until I was thirteen. In Brazil, most kids play futebol de salao, which is similar to five-a-side. It is played on a hard surface and the ball is a lot smaller and covered with foam so it does not bounce. This makes the ball harder to play with at first, but it is great practice for when you play on a full-size pitch. On a small pitch you need to have control and move the ball around quickly. Most kids in my neighbourhood played futebol de salao - that is why Brazil always produces players with great skill."
Finally, in 2004, Juninho's great love affair with Teeside came to an abrupt end with his transfer to Celtic but not before he helped bring the Teeside club its first trophy in 128 years when they beat Bolton 2-1 in the Carling Cup.
