Spurs Legend - signed by Jimmy Greaves
Jimmy Greaves was indisputedly one of the greatest figures to dominate British football in the 1960s. His razor-sharp instincts on the football field helped him to establish an unassailable reputation with both Tottenham and England fans.
After starting his career with Chelsea (against all his instincts, as he was a Spurs fan from an early age) and a brief interlude in Milan, in which he scored 9 times in 12 matches, it was an easy task for Bill Nicholson to entice him to play for Spurs, for a transfer fee of £99,999. Nicholson refrained from paying the extra pound as he didn't want Greaves to be burdened with the label of being Britain's first £100,000 player. He proved to be excellent value for money, scoring a hat-trick on his debut for the club against Blackpool in a 5-2 thrashing and exceeding the club's individual scoring record in his first season.
And so began one of the most distinguished footballing careers of any player at any British club, a career which was to delight a generation of Spurs fans and turn a bright young talent into a legend who towered above most of his contemporaries.
The highlights of his star-studded career at Tottenham included winning the 1962 FA Cup, in which he scored the opening goal in a 3-1 win over Burnley, and helping to secure the club's 2-0 victory over Chelsea to take the FA Cup title in 1967.
A criticism which was levelled against him during his time at Spurs was that he would often seemed reluctant to fully engage in the game, leaving the hard work to the other players and then snatching all the glory. This has to be sour grapes - his scoring record was sensational and speaks for itself: 452 goals in 595 first class games. So also was his international career, with 57 caps for England and 44 goals, including two four-goal games and four hat-tricks. He won a European Cup Winner's Cup medal in 1963, finding the goal twice in a 5-1 triumph over Athletico Madrid, a game which made Spurs the first British side to claim a European trophy.
From whichever perspective Jimmy's distinguished career is viewed, there is no disputing that he has earned himself a foremost place in Tottenham's Hall of Fame.
