Magnificent Seven - signed by Graham Gooch
By the end of the second day's play against India at Lords in 1990, England declared at a massive 653 for only 4 wickets. In providing over half this total, Graham Gooch reaffirmed his status as one of the cricketing greats. In compiling an incredible 333 not out, Gooch scored the highest post-war test innings of any England batsman. A stunning knock from a true English sporting giant.
Entering the England side in 1975 as a fresh-faced 21-year-old, Gooch had earned the reputation of an unmitigated ball slogger, matched only by a prodigious run-scoring ability. Gooch was to become much more consistent and ultimately a better all-round cricketer. His dedication to the game was renowned, while his incredible fitness and work ethic proved a steadying influence when he assumed control of a troubled England side in 1988.
As a captain, Graham Gooch led an England side in a transitionary period, but no player ever doubted his natural authority, or way with the bat. He could bowl a mean slow right-arm delivery when the need arose and his economical rate was to come to England's rescue many times.
Gooch ended his test career in 1995. Of his 20 test centuries, 8 contained over 150 runs, itself the supreme example of a batsman's concentration. With 8,900 test match runs, Graham Gooch stands alone as England's leading run scorer, with a record that may well stand the test of time.
