Midfield General - signed by Gordon Strachan
After a distinguished career playing for Aberdeen in his native Scotland under the tutelage of Alex Ferguson, talented, right-sided midfielder, Gordon Strachan, was tempted south of the border by Ron Atkinson, for Manchester United, for a fee of £500,000.
Unlike his stay at Aberdeen, during which time he won two Scottish League titles, the FA title thee times, the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Super Cup, Strachan's time at United was relatively undecorated, winning only an FA Cup Winner's medal. Even when his previous manager, Alex Ferguson, took over from Ron Atkinson, he still did not really settle into the club.
It was only when he transferred to Leeds in 1989, under Howard Wilkinson's revolution, that his old sparkle seemed to return. In his first season at Elland Road he helped the club win the 2nd Division title and return to the top flight. Two years later, at the age of 35, Strachan had added the 1992 Championship title to his list of playing honours and was named Footballer of the Year - the only player to win the award on both sides of the border.
Alongside his highly successful club career, Gordon Strachan won 50 caps playing for Scotland.
