The Flying Scotsman - Gavin Hastings
Arguably the greatest ever Scottish rugby player, full back Gavin Hastings has scored more points for Scotland than anyone else. He made a dream debut in the Five Nations in 1986 when he scored all of Scotland's points with 6 penalty goals in an 18-17 victory over France, enabling the two sides to share the Championship.
Hastings had one of the best kicking boots the game has ever seen, but also weighed in with his fair share of tries. Indeed, only two men have scored more tries for the Scots. While not noted for his pace, his bone-shattering tackles and steadfast defending instilled fear in his opponents.
His crowning moment as the Scottish Captain was probably winning the Grand Slam, Triple Crown and the Calcutta Cup with a 13-7 victory over England at Murrayfield in 1990. His cleverly chipped ball allowed Tony Stanger to score a vital try.
Gavin Hastings captained the British Lions on two tours, the most successful being the tour of Australia in 1989 where the team recorded a 2-1 series win and Hastings led from the back as top points-scorer and a match-winning performance in the final Test where he kicked 5 penalty goals. The 1993 tour of New Zealand resulted in a 2-1 series loss but the Lions gave a great account of themselves.
The great Clem Thomas described Hastings as, "The epitome of the rugby man - brave, resolute, adventurous and one who loves a party."
