Famed for his part in England's legendary 1966 World Cup triumph over West Germany at Wembley, Jack Charlton also enjoyed a distinguished 20 year professional career at Elland Road and no other player has made more league appearances for the Yorkshire club.

Charlton made his senior debut for Leeds in April 1953 and within ten years he was a fixture in Raich Carter's starting XI. His rock solid performances at the heart of the defence helped the club win promotion to the old First Division in 1957 and once he was joined in the defence by Norman Hunter in the early 1960s, Leeds were ready to become a major force.

He was voted Player of the Year in 1967 and in the following year, Leeds beat Arsenal to lift the League Cup. In 1969, the team win the championship and two years later they claimed the Fairs Cup after beating Italian giants Juventus over two legs on away goals. Charlton completed his haul of domestic honours in 1972 when Leeds beat Arsenal 1-0 in the FA Cup final.

Injury forced his retirement after two decades service in 1973. In total he played in a record 629 league games for the club and in his phenomenal 774 appearances for Leeds in all competitions, he was only four short of a century of goals.
