Europe's Finest - Signed by 2002 captain Sam Torrance
Dethroned as champions in 1999, Europe came storming back against the United States in the 2002 Ryder Cup at the Belfry to reclaim the famous old trophy by 15.5 points to 13.5 - the biggest winning margin in the preceding 17 years of the tournament.
Captained by Sam Torrance, Europe led by a single point after the first day's four-balls and foursomes but were locked at eight apiece after Saturday's action, setting the stage for a titanic tussle on the final day's play.
Colin Montgomery preserved his magnificent unbeaten record in the 2002 competiton in the first of the day's singles contests, beating Scott Hoch five and four and further wins from Bernhard Langer, Padraig Harrington and Thomas Bjorn put Europe firmly in the driving seat.
It was left to Paul McGinley to wrap up victory. Playing Jim Furyk, McGinley only needed to half his match with the American and he made no mistakes to ensure Europe were champions once again with still two matches out on the old course.
