Manchester United FA Cup Winners 1996 - signed by Eric Cantona
An incredible shot from Eric Cantona, threaded through Liverpool's defence, was enough to win the FA Cup for Manchester United in 1996. Though the game was not a classic of flowing football, it was a characteristically tense FA Cup Final, contested by two of the country's greatest teams.
Eighty-five minutes of play saw the two teams cancel each other out but, with five minutes to go, the King's time arrived. From a Beckham corner, Liverpool's goalkeeper David James flapped the ball out to Cantona. With perfect technique, Cantona had adjusted to strike the ball from his position in the D at the edge of the penalty area. With at least 20 yards to the goal line, Cantona stuck the ball with deadly accuracy through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner of the net.
In winning the Cup for United, Cantona crowned an extraordinary comeback. He missed the 1995 FA Cup Final due to his long suspension and many doubted he would, or even could, return to the game after such a long period in the wilderness. After the final whistle, Cantona invited United Captain Steve Bruce to lift the trophy but Bruce politely declined, realising that the 1996 FA Cup was King Eric's for the taking.
The season before, Manchester United's young team inspired Alan Hansen to remark that, "You don't win anything with kind." Less than one year on, the same team had won the League and FA Cup Double and secured their place in football history, all under the captaincy of Eric Cantona. As the great Bobby Charlton said: "A lot of people have had to eat humble pie over Eric Cantona."
