Eric the Red - Signed by Eric Cantona
In a thrilling match, Eric Cantona converts an early penalty against Manchester City at Maine Road in April 1996.
This was to be the third Manchester derby of the 1995/96 season. United secured a 1-0 home win in the League back in October and a little over six weeks prior to this Maine Road League encounter, United dumped City out of the FA Cup 2-1, again at Old Trafford.
This was the third Manchester derby of the 1995/96 season and both earlier matches had resulted in United victories. In the final leg in this most bruising of local encounters, City set out after something of a tactical rethink.
It was a typically tense match. United took the lead after just 6 minutes with Cantona's coolly-taken penalty and despite City pulling one back five minutes before half time, United went in for the break 2-1 up after an Andy Cole goal from King Eric's pass. The second half saw a succession of United chances as they attacked on the break. City's Uwe Rossler pulled things back to 2-2, with 20 minutes remaining. A stunning Giggs strike finished the match off and United were worthy winners.
