When Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro from Sporting Lisbon in a £12.2 million deal in the summer of 2003, they were buying a precocious 18-year-old with huge potential but little first team experience.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson promptly handed the young Portuguese winger the fabled number seven shirt previously worn by legends like George Best, Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona and the teenager quickly proved to the Old Trafford faithful than he was a worthy successor to some of the club's greatest names.

Blessed with searing pace, strength, dazzling skills and an unerring eye for goal, Ronaldo adapted to the pace of the Premier League with ease and despite his youth, he soon became a key component of the United side.

It wasn't long before the Portuguese star was helping United add silverware to the Old Trafford trophy cabinet and in what is still an embryonic career, he has already claimed the 2004 FA Cup, the 2006 League Cup and the Premiership title in 2007.

Individual honours have also been showered on the United playmaker and in 2007 he became only the second player to win the PFA's Players' Player and Young Player Awards in the same year.

Ronaldo's performances have improved with every season he has spent at Old Trafford and in United's title-winning 2006-07 campaign, the winger found the back of the net an incredible 23 times for his club to stake his claim as one of the world game's greatest current players.
