Ryder Cup 2002 - signed by Colin Montgomerie
Colin Montgomerie plays out of a bunker during the Ryder Cup 2002 at The Belfry. Monty played a huge role in Europe securing victory from USA by 15.5 to 12.5, contributing a massive 4.5 points to the European cause. With exceptional golf, he demonstrated just why he won seven consecutive Order of Merit titles in the 1990s: three days of Ryder Cup competition witnessed some truly superb golf from the Scotsman, with his undefeated run in all Ryder Cup singles matches extended.
Out of five matches, Monty won four and halved a fifth, remaining undefeated in the 2002 tournament. Massive off the tee, precise around the greens and lethal with putter in hand, Monty was untouchable at the Belfry. As an elder-statesman of the team, Colin was an inspiration to younger members of Europe's squad and Custis Strange, the defeated American Captain in 2002, recognised Monty's importance to his team: "He is their leader. He played magnificently and led not only in the locker room, but also on the course."
Colin may not have holed the Ryder Cup's winning putt but he did more than any one player to bring the trophy home to Europe. He led by example throughout the tournament and spurred on an under-estimated European side to unheralded heights.
