Chelsea's Century - Book signed by Ron 'Chopper' Harris

Born in Hackney in 1944, Ron 'Chopper' Harris was one of the most uncompromising and feared defenders of his generation and he earned himself cult status at Stamford Bridge with almost 20 years of abrasive service in the blue of Chelsea.

Harris came through the junior ranks at Chelsea, playing in the side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 1961 and he made his senior debut early the following year in a league game against Sheffield Wednesday. It was to be the first appearance of a long and distinguished Chelsea career.

The centre half soon established himself as a first team regular and in 1965 he was part of the side that beat Leicester City in the League Cup final. He was made club captain in 1966 when Terry Venables signed for Spurs and Harris' leadership qualities were much in evidence at Stamford Bridge over the next decade.

A year after being handed the captain's armband, he took the side to the FA Cup final and although Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Tottenham at Wembley, Harris and his team were to taste FA Cup success in 1970 when the Blues beat Leeds United.

Perhaps his greatest moment came in 1971 when Chelsea reached the Cup Winners' Cup final. The Blues faced the mighty Real Madrid in Athens but Harris inspired Chelsea to a famous 2-1 extra-time victory in the replay.

Harris finally left Stamford Bridge in 1980 after 19 years service and a club record 795 appearances.
