Chelsea League Champions 1955 - signed by Roy Bentley
As Chelsea's captain and leading scorer for eight consecutive seasons, Roy Bentley has done more than enough to earn a place in the Stamford Bridge history books. And when he led the team to their first ever league title in their anniversary year of 1955, he cemented his place as a Stamford Bridge legend.
Roy was a pioneer of the deep-lying centre forward position in the English game. His excellent heading ability was one of his key strengths. He was often described as an elegant player, but his time in the Royal Navy and the boxing ring ensured that he was no soft touch.
Chelsea's 1955 champions were a relatively old side, built on a shoestring budget by Ted Drake. Unfortunately, the FA refused to allow them to compete in the inaugural European Cup, and the side faded soon after.
Only two players have scored more than Roy's 150 goals for the club, and as Chelsea's class of 2004/05 marched towards the club's second league title, manager Jose Mourinho admitted that Roy was the only player from the fifties that he would have had in his current side. Fittingly it was Roy who presented the current captain, John Terry, with the 2005 Premiership trophy.
