Lee Carsley's transformation over the summer of 2004 epitomised that of Everton as a whole. His determination and tenacity played a huge part in The Toffees' unexpected rise into European qualification in a season when many pundits had tipped them to be relegated.
A rock in Everton's midfield, Lee Carsley was one of the mainstays of Everton's 2004/05 success. As well as his steadfast defensive abilities, his armoury also boasts a great eye for goal from free kicks. David Moyes' enduring confidence in the former Republic of Ireland international was rewarded when Carsley scored the only goal in the manager's first Derby victory in December 2004.
The 200th Merseyside Derby was a typically hard-fought and scrappy affair. Lee Carsley had spent the first hour with Liverpool's Steven Gerrard comfortably in his pocket when he picked up a loose ball twenty yards from Chris Kirkland's goal. His swerving strike flew past the unsighted goalkeeper and the Goodison Park crowd erupted. Seconds later, Carsley found himself buried under a mound of his ecstatic team mates, and another chapter of Merseyside football history was written.
