An attacking midfielder with precocious skills and dazzling vision, Joe Cole has truly come of age since his £6.6million transfer from West Ham to Chelsea in 2003 and the England star is now one of the Premier League's most consistent and dangerous performers.

Born in Romford in 1981, Cole came through the junior ranks at Upton Park and quickly earned himself a reputation as one of the most naturally gifted players of his generation, playing a major role as the young hammers lifted the 1999 FA Youth Cup. He spent five years with West Ham before Chelsea took him across London to Stamford Bridge.

He initially struggled to make an impact on the Blues' expensively-assembled squad but his fortunes changed with the arrival of Joe Mourinho as manager and he was a key component in the side from 2004 onwards as Chelsea won the Premier League in 2004-05 and then successfully defended their title the following season.

Cole also won the League Cup with the Blues in 2005 and was part of the side that claimed a domestic double in 2007 with triumphs in both the FA and League Cup finals.
