True Legend - signed by Sir Bobby Robson
Sir Bobby Robson's career as a manager and player is second to none. A miner's son from Sacriston, County Durham, Bobby made his early mark playing for Fulham alongside that mecurial talent Johnny Haynes. After scoring 68 goals in 152 games, he was transferred to the Baggies, where his international career took off, playing 20 times for England. Returning to Fulham in 1962, he played a further 192 games before deciding to enter management.
Although his early experiences at Vancouver Whitecaps and Fulham were less than successful, it was his third job, in charge at Ipswich Town that laid down the mark of a brilliant career in management. In thirteen years at Portman Road, he spent less than £1 million on transfers, developing a highly successful youth policy which helped Ipswich to an FA Cup win in 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1981.
In 1981, he was offered the England job, which climaxed when England failed to reach the Final by a whisker, losing that infamous penalty shoot-out to West Germany. Success in Europe as a club manager of PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto and Barcelona followed. Winning trophies wherever he managed, Bobby was past retirement age when his dream job of managing his boyhood club was offered to him. His time at Newcastle saw the great club almost reach the heights, but failure to qualify for the Champions League was too much for the board, and Bobby's love affair with the Magpies was over.
