The King of Headingley - signed by Bob Willis

In the most memorable Test encounter of them all, Bob Willis was to take an incredible 8 wickets for only 43 runs during Australia's second innings. England went on to record one of cricket's unlikeliest Test victories.

During Australia's first innings, England failed to make any impact as the visitors declared at 401 for 9. The home team then recorded only 174 runs and were forced to follow on. An innings defeat loomed large. Heroics from Ian Botham with the bat prevented a humiliating early defeat, but England still only set Australia a target of 130 runs to win.

As the Australian batsmen walked on to the wicket during the final day's play at Headingley, they saw their target as nothing more than a formality. They hadn't gambled on Willis. With searing pace and unbridled aggression, he tore through an Australian order unable to control his deliveries. What a time to produce a career-best Test performance of 8-43. Australia, battered by Botham and bruised by Willis, succumbed for just 111 and England won an incredible test, arguably the greatest of all time, by 18 runs.

At almost 6ft 6in, the sight of Willis hurtling into the crease was quite a sight, not least for opposing batsmen. Headingley in 1981 was his just reward for a career long on courage and determination. 'The Headingley Test' is now a major part of cricketing folklore and Bob Willis was its key player.
