The Magic 30 - signed by Bob Latchford
When Bob Latchford left Goodison Park in 1981 he'd outscored every Everton striker since the legendary William Ralph 'Dixie' Dean. A brave, natural goal poacher, Bob was one of the most prolific strikers of his generation.
With powerful strength and the intelligence to be in the right place at the right time, Latchford was a ray of light that shone throughout a difficult decade for Everton.
Everton's 6-0 demolition of Chelsea on the final day of the 1977/78 season didn't win them any trophies, but the whole of Goodison Park ended up on its feet in celebration. Bob Latchford's two goals saw him become the first top flight striker in 6 years to score 30 goals in one season.
Everton were 4-0 up, and 40,000 Evertonians were cheering every attack. Latchford had already reached 29 goals, thanks to a great header past Peter Bonetti. Late in the game, Mick Lyons made it 5-0, but Goodison Park fell silent. Lyons hadn't seen a well-placed Latchford, begging for a pass. When a penalty was awarded a few minutes later, Bob stepped up and scored his elusive 30th goal and the stadium erupted.
