Grand Slam 1980 - Signed by Bill Beaumont
Born in Lancashire in 1952, Bill Beaumont is one of the most popular figures in English rugby. He made 34 international appearances, including 21 as Captain. His first game for England came against Ireland in 1975 when he was surprised to discover his name amongst the substitutes on the back of a newspaper.
Beaumont's greatest sporting triumph was undoubtedly capturing England's first Five Nations Grand Slam for 23 years. Following a 30-18 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield, he was carried shoulder high from the field by his ecstatic team mates.
"The highlight ... was winning the Grand Slam from nowhere in 1980 - from Wooden Spoon to Grand Slam. Just me and a bunch of mates." Speaking in The Times, 9 March 2004.
He also captained the Lions for their South African tour of 1980.
Unfortunately, Bill was forced to quit the game at just 29 years of age owing to a head injury. He was awarded the OBE for services to rugby in 1982 and was team captain on BBC TV's Question of Sport for several years. He is currently the British and Irish Lions tour manager.
