The King - signed by Barry John
In only a short international career of six years Barry John managed to establish himself as perhaps the greatest fly half of all time. His two-footed, tactical kicking gave opposing full backs nightmares. Like all the great players, he always seemed to have space and time on the ball, and his sidesteps and dummies left opponents chasing shadows.
He won 25 caps for Wales, scoring 90 points. His best game for Wales was arguably the 19-18 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield in 1971. John produced an outstanding performance in attack and defence on the way to a crucial victory in a Grand Slam season. In the final decider against France he was brave enough to dive in for a vital try while carrying a broken nose. Later that year he scored an incredible 191 points on the Lions tour of New Zealand. His displays of tactical nouse and technical skill dominated the Test matches and led even the New Zealanders to hail him as 'The King.'
Barry John announced his retirement from the game aged just 27, citing the pressures of international rugby - a surprising decision given the stunning performances he produced under the stress of international rugby. However, it has meant he will always be remembered as he was at his peak -the most dynamic and exciting fly half the game has ever witnessed.
