Euro Star - signed by Alan Smith
Alan Smith had the perfect game for the Arsenal team of the early 1990s. Tall, lean and quick, Smith proved the perfect aerial foil for players like Michael Thomas and Ian Wright. A clinical finisher in front of goal, with fantastic movement and the ability to provide brilliantly judged knock-downs for team-mates, Alan Smith played 8 seasons for the Gunners, making 347 appearances and scoring 115 goals in all competititions.
In the 20th minute of a tense Cup Winner's Cup Final in 1994, Parma's Lorenzo Minotti was to mis-kick an overhead clearance and allow in Alan Smith with a lethal, left foot volley to beat the Parma keeper. Arsenal legend Michael Thomas looks on as his strike counterpart volleys home with an instinctive wonder-goal, to win Arsenal their first and only other European title since 1970.
Parma had no reponse to Smith's early lead and the London team held out for a famous victory. It was a celebrated night for Arsenal, made possible by the incredible, dedicated work of Alan Smith, in perhaps his finest hour as a professional footballer. The exclusion of English teams from European competition had only recently ended and Smith's goal was an essential part of bringing English football back into the European fold.
